AI orders appeared in your Shopify store
- Eligible Shopify stores can have Agentic active by default
- ChatGPT sends buyers to your store checkout; Copilot can offer direct checkout
- Change catalog access and direct checkout separately
- Shopify lists no extra selling fee for these two channels; processing still costs
- You're still the seller; check the payment and any dispute notice
An order arrived from an AI channel you haven't used. Shopify can activate Agentic storefronts by default for eligible stores. Open Sales channels > Agentic, then check the channel. Start with the order's attribution before changing anything.
Why did the order appear?
Shopify Catalog makes eligible products available to AI channels, and orders show a channel or referrer in Shopify admin. That tells you where to start checking the sale.
Discovery and checkout aren't the same thing: ChatGPT buyers finish at your online-store checkout. Copilot can let buyers pay inside the conversation instead, with direct checkout active by default for eligible stores. The separate Agentic plan starts with direct checkout off.
Check your plan and channel before following a path below. If your controls differ, ask Shopify which setup applies:
Order [ID] shows [channel or referrer]. Which checkout handled it? Which Agentic settings apply to our plan and permissions?
How do I change a channel?
Start in Sales channels > Agentic in Shopify admin. Deactivate Allow Shopify to manage for me before choosing either channel.
| What you want | Control to change | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Stop sharing through Shopify Catalog with ChatGPT | Click ChatGPT, deactivate Shopify Catalog access, then Save | Removes that catalog route, with a delay |
| Send Copilot buyers to your store checkout | Click Microsoft Copilot, deactivate Direct checkout, then Save | Buyers can still discover products and visit your store |
| Stop sharing through Shopify Catalog with Copilot | Click Microsoft Copilot, deactivate Shopify Catalog access, then Save | Removes that catalog route, with a delay |
ChatGPT has no direct-checkout toggle in this Shopify setup, and turning off Copilot checkout won't switch off discovery. Catalog removal can take up to seven days for either channel.
Your products may still appear through crawling or other feeds, and removing a channel's catalog access doesn't remove products from Shop. Use Shopify's product-discovery guide if you need to investigate those other routes.
What will this order cost?
Check the channel shown on this order, then its terms. Shopify's ChatGPT and Copilot guides list no additional selling fee. Your standard payment processing fees still apply.
That isn't a price promise for every AI channel. Shopify's supplemental terms permit fees for some participating channels, with those charges set out in Shopify admin. Check your own account before pricing the sale.
OpenAI's Instant Checkout announcement describes a separate purchase flow with a merchant fee, without publishing a percentage. That announcement doesn't price Shopify's ChatGPT referral checkout. Match any fee claim to the checkout you actually used.
Who is responsible?
You're still the seller of record under Shopify's terms and remain responsible for the customer transaction. Microsoft also describes merchants keeping that role in Copilot Checkout. An AI referral doesn't establish chargeback protection for this payment.
Keep the order ID, channel, payment status and fulfillment record together, then add customer messages and any dispute notice before replying. If the payment state isn't clear, ask your provider. Check for an existing refund or case before promising a credit.
I can help with order [ID]. Tell me what went wrong. I'll check the payment and explain the next step.
For a Shopify Payments case, use the deadline shown in admin; a different payment provider needs its own case instructions. Start with the chargeback notice.
Scale Callout
| Your setup | What to do |
|---|---|
| You run the store yourself | Save the channel settings beside the order you're checking |
| Staff or an agency manages checkout | Name who changes settings and who answers order questions |
Where This Breaks
A saved setting isn't proof that all discovery has stopped. Your channel and plan determine which controls you have. If the expected control is missing, stop and ask support. Use the channel's own guide before changing another setting.
Test to Run
Record your plan, channel and settings before changing anything. Use Shopify's supported test setup for your store. Check which checkout opens and whether the setting saved. Recheck catalog sharing after the stated update interval has passed. Keep live payments out of this settings test.
